Dr. Fredrik Fatemi- Pending Confirmation
Senior Research Scientist for Quantum Science
DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, AFC
Dr. Fredrik Fatemi became the Army Senior Research Scientist (ST) for Quantum Sciences in August 2022. In this role, he develops the Army’s strategy for achieving revolutionary capabilities in timing, sensing, computing, and networking using the nonintuitive properties of quantum mechanics. He has coauthored numerous national strategies in quantum science across the US Government, and advises for major quantum efforts, including the Microelectronics Commons, DARPA programs, and USW(R&E) programs. Dr. Fatemi enjoys giving tutorials to separate hype from the true revolutionary possibilities of quantum science.
Dr. Fatemi’s research career has spanned over 30 years across several fields, with 25 of those in DoW labs. He received his PhD in molecular physics in 1998 from the University of Virginia. He then conducted postdoctoral research on ultracold atoms and molecules at NIST-Gaithersburg in the group of Dr. William Phillips (1997 Nobel Prize, Physics). In 2001, Dr. Fatemi joined the research staff at the Naval Research Laboratory, where he led several programs in fiber laser development, atomic and optical physics, and nanophotonics.
In 2015, Dr. Fatemi joined DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory and became the Chief of the Quantum Science and Technology Branch. In that role, he oversaw a portfolio of quantum information science while continuing research in quantum sensing and nanophotonics. He has initiated several extramural research collaborations and centers, including the Quantum Technology Center with the University of Maryland. He has published over 100 technical papers in quantum, atomic, molecular, optical, and laser physics. In his free time, Dr. Fatemi enjoys wildlife photography and astrophotography, and spending time with his wife and two boys.
