
CAPT Matt Lewis

A native of Hillsboro, Oregon, CAPT Matthew Lewis graduated from Brown University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After receiving his commission, CAPT Lewis completed Nuclear Power training in Charleston, SC and Submarine Basic training in Groton, CT, before reporting to USS SANTA FE (SSN 763) in Pearl Harbor, HI. While assigned, the ship completed a Selected Restricted Availability and one six-month Western Pacific Deployment. CAPT Lewis completed his department head tour assigned to USS OLYMPIA (SSN 717), serving as the Engineer Officer. During his tour, the ship completed an arduous Engineered Refueling Overhaul in Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and
returned the ship back to its operational cycle. CAPT Lewis then served as the Executive Officer aboard USS OKLAHOMA CITY (SSN 723), where he completed numerous deployed operations in the Western Pacific from the homeport of Guam.
CAPT Lewis commanded USS NORTH CAROLINA (SSN 777) in which his crew completed a 24 month Extended Docking Selected Restricted Availability in Pearl Harbor, HI. His crew was the first of five Virginia Class submarines to complete a major maintenance availability ahead of schedule and under budget, setting the fleet standard for the conduct of availabilities as well as returning a deployment to the ship’s lifetime.
After his first sea tour, CAPT Lewis served on CNO (N2) staff in Operational Support. On his second shore duty, he served as Squadron Engineer for Submarine Squadron Three in Pearl Harbor, HI, supporting six submarines across the range of maintenance and deployment cycles. CAPT Lewis was assigned to Research and Development Support Activity and subsequently attended the Dwight D. Eisenhower School, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy. He served on CNO (N3) staff as Branch Head for Nuclear Matters and Ocean Systems.
CAPT Lewis became an Acquisition Professional and served as as the Principal Assistant Program Manager for Requirements and Test for COLUMBIA Class Submarine Program (PMS 397) and VIRGINIA Class Submarine Program (PMS 450) and Director, Program Improvement for PMS 450. He served as the Executive Assistant to the Principal Military Deputy for Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition. He currently serves as the Program Manager for Unmanned Maritime Systems (PMS 406).
His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, as well as multiple unit and service awards.
CAPT Lewis is married to the former Diane Kohara of Hilo, HI, has two beautiful children, Madilyn and Nicholas, and resides in Springfield, VA.
