Dr. Peter Schemmel is the Assistant Program Manager for Capability Development supporting Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. The SCaN program aims to build and maintain a scalable integrated mission support infrastructure that can readily evolve to accommodate new and changing technologies, while providing comprehensive, robust, and cost-effective space communications services to enable NASA's space missions. Particularly, Dr. Schemmel supports SCaN’s effort to transition NASA’s near-Earth missions to commercial communication and navigation services. He also serves as the Project Manager for the Communications Services Project, enabling NASA’s acquisition of commercial services for future satellite communications needs.
Dr. Schemmel received his BS in Physics from the Illinois Institute of Technology, before continuing his education in Europe, where he earned his PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the University of Manchester in England and completed his postdoctorate research at Heriot Watt University in Scotland. Schemmel enjoys spending quality time at home with his wife and dachshund.
