Dean, Science & Professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences

University of Alabama in Huntsville

Before joining The University of Alabama in Huntsville as Dean of the College of Science, Dr. Rainer Steinwandt served as Department Chair of Florida Atlantic University's Department of Mathematical Sciences. During his time at FAU, he also served as Director of the university's Center for Cryptology and Information Security. Earlier, he completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, exploring computer algebra topics. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Post-Quantum Cryptography, a co-author of the Status of quantum computer development report of Germany's Federal Office for Information Security, and a recipient of the 2018 NATO Science for Peace and Security Partnership Prize.

Today, Dr. Steinwandt's primary research interest is cryptology and its interplay with quantum computing. For a multi-year project on the secure implementation of post-quantum cryptography involving partners from France, Israel, and Slovakia, he was awarded the 2018 NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Partnership Prize. Dr. Steinwandt is a co-founder of an interdisciplinary Dagstuhl Seminar series on quantum cryptanalysis and received funding through the Air Force Research Laboratory, the German Federal Office for Information Security, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Security Agency, and the NATO SPS program.
