The Secret Service requested $102 million for protective countermeasures in its fiscal year 2027 budget request. This includes $9.8 million for counter-unmanned aircraft systems, or C-UAS, funding and $18 million for cybersecurity funding.
The Secret Service is strengthening its countersurveillance posture with countersurveillance UAS to detect, monitor and mitigate threats posed by unauthorized UAS. The Secret Service also requested $50 million to modernize IT infrastructure in FY 2027.
Who Is Sean Curran?
Sean Curran was sworn in as the 28th director of the U.S. Secret Service on Jan. 22, 2025. He oversees the agency’s integrated investigative and protective missions and leads a workforce of more than 8,200 special agents, uniformed division officers, technical law enforcement officers and mission support professionals.
Curran is no stranger to working on the U.S. Secret Service’s most important details. In addition to being assigned to President Trump’s detail in 2025, he was also assigned to President Obama’s presidential protection detail, according to CBS News. Curran was awarded as special agent of the year in 2007.
After a brief period of working for the assistant director of investigations, Curran was promoted to direct the U.S. Secret Service coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign and, later, the protective intelligence squad.
Throughout his 23-year law enforcement career, Curran has proven himself at directing and leading operational security plans for some of the most complex national special security events in the history of the Secret Service. He integrated cutting-edge protective methodologies and technologies deployed during major site visits and events throughout the 2024 presidential campaign.
